A Year of Impactful Achievements
2023 was a landmark year for the World Fish Migration Foundation (WFMF), as we significantly advanced our mission to safeguard and restore free-flowing rivers around the globe. Thanks to a €1.2 million grant from the European Open Rivers Programme, we expanded dam removal activities into the Balkans and beyond, marking a major leap forward in our mission.With the support of our dedicated team and global partners and donors, we've seen our efforts gain momentum, scaling up dam removal initiatives and enhancing river health worldwide. The collective dedication and support of our network have been invaluable, enabling us to push the boundaries and pioneer new initiatives for river restoration.

Our Vision and Mission
At WFMF, we are driven by a vision of a world where rivers are teeming with life, supporting both biodiversity and the communities that rely on these vital ecosystems. Our mission to mainstream dam removal as a crucial tool for river restoration guides our efforts. We aim to foster an international movement that not only restores river ecosystems but also catalyses broader conservation efforts, enhancing both natural values and socioeconomic benefits for the regions we touch.

Looking Ahead: Targets for 2028
As we look towards the future, our goals are set high. By 2028, we aim to see dam removal integrated into legislation across all EU countries, with an average of two dams removed daily from European rivers. Our ambition extends to catalysing significant ecological and social changes, ensuring that free-flowing rivers can be enjoyed by future generations.
