The Mulago Foundation supports new projects to expand
dam removal in Africa
WFMF is on a mission to expand the dam removal movement across the globe. Our next step: Dam Removal Africa. With the support of the Mulago Foundation, we started this project with the aim of preserving migratory fish and free-flowing rivers across the globe. Our ultimate goal is to scale up dam removal as a river restoration strategy throughout the African continent, securing and improving local food sources, particularly fisheries.
In this project, we will:
Join us in our mission to spread the message of Dam Removal worldwide, contributing to the creation of free and healthy rivers, and help us address the outdated barriers in Africa!
- Barrier Tracker Campaign: expand the reach of Barrier Tracker App in Africa! Our objective is to create an extensive map highlighting all barriers and potential dam removal sites in African rivers.
- Expertise Showcase: produce a science-based report that underscores the substantial benefits of dam removal in enhancing fisheries, alleviating poverty, and safeguarding local food resources within the broader African context. The report will also emphasize how this measure prepares local populations for unexpected climate change challenges.
- Implement a Roadmap: guide successful dam removal initiatives, we're developing a comprehensive roadmap, with a specific focus on revitalizing fish populations and inspiring future demolitions.
- Dam Removal Africa: celebrate a historic dam removal event in Africa! Together with some workshops and expert training courses that will facilitate knowledge exchange and advance the cause of dam removal.
